From individual offices to two open office spaces with desk-sharing workstations and communication islands – all in new, modern colours and with fancy acoustic solutions.

The Senate Department for Finance is based in a venerable, listed building in Berlin Mitte, directly on the Spree. A pilot area was designed here in the so-called “Spange”: Removing the walls provided room for two open office spaces. These offices are equipped with twelve desk sharing workstations. Room I is designed as a “loud” room with communication islands, meeting lounge, meeting room and meeting pod with video conferencing equipment in addition to four workstations.
Room II is designed as a “quiet” room with eight workstations for concentrated work and a phone booth and meeting pod as options for retreat. Lockers are provided for storing everything from laptops to cycling clothing, which also function as room dividers in Room I.
Employees from all over the building can use the pilot area.
The trend in the administrative area is also away from light grey and oak towards a modern colour design and homey working environment. Because this is the Senate Department for Finance, the colour design was derived from the 100 euro note (green tones) and 10 euro note (red tones) and can be continued on other floors with the 50 euro note etc. Combined with beige tones, this results in a bright spatial effect, also because the floor and walls were designed in light colours. The pilot area shows how diverse acoustically effective furniture can be:
There are ceiling sails in sculptural shapes, wall panels with geometric patterns, acoustic panels made of moss and mobile acoustic lamellas. And there are acoustic curtains with a shimmering surface and an acoustically effective outer covering for the meeting pod and phone booth.
The newly designed open office space now offers room for spontaneous encounters and teamwork, and the harmonious colour design and homey atmosphere ensure that everyone feels comfortable.
